The Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) was signed into law by President Obama on July 6, 2012, and became fully active on October 1, 2012. This Act funds surface transportation programs at more than US$105 billion for fiscal years 2013 and 2014. MAP-21 is the first long-term highway authorization enacted since 2005.
Under the new appropriations bill, the U.S. Government places heavy emphasis on transportation infrastructure management through long-range planning and performance monitoring. To accomplish these tasks, transportation agencies must be able to locate, inspect, monitor, and report the condition of infrastructure assets on a continual basis.
