Intergraph Awards $1.8 Million in Educational Grants to Global Institutions

SmartPlant and Other Engineering Tools Broaden Learning Horizons for Students Worldwide

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 22, 2005 – Intergraph Corporation announced that its Process, Power & Marine division recently awarded SmartPlant® and other engineering software with an estimated commercial lease value of more than $1.8 million (U. S.) to five international educational institutions. Recipients include FUNCEFET, Brazil ( $479,960); Northern Alberta Institute of Technology ( $370,800), Canada; University of Limerick, Ireland ( $129,600); University of Western Australia ( $701,600); and Vidyavardhini College of Engineering, India ( $194,700). Engineering software provided under the grant program includes SmartPlant P&ID, SmartPlant Electrical, SmartPlant Review, SmartPlant Instrumentation, SmartSketch® and PDS® (Plant Design System). The Educational Grant Program ( awards software to institutions of higher learning and technology worldwide.

Dr. Seamus McMonagle, course director – Graduate Diploma in Chemical Engineering Program, University of Limerick, said, “The Graduate Diploma in Chemical Engineering Program at the University of Limerick is pleased to have been awarded an educational program grant from Intergraph Process, Power & Marine for the use of SmartPlant P&ID. Training in this industry-standard P&ID software allows us to provide our graduates with advanced skills in process design, operation and optimization, with concomitant benefits in their subsequent careers as process engineers in the Irish and international pharmaceuticals and chemicals industries.”

Prof. Bob Hurle, head of the University of Western Australia’s School of Oil and Gas Engineering Department, said the university plans to expand its involvement in the Educational Grant Program. “Access to software such as SmartSketch, SmartPlant P&ID, SmartPlant Electrical and SmartPlant Instrumentation will dramatically affect the way engineering design is taught and hence put our graduates at the forefront of their field,” Hurle said. “Future releases of SmartPlant 3D will be added so integrated engineering and design – using existing analytical software for process, offshore engineering and naval architecture – can be taught to students.”

Grants Bring Advanced Technology to Classroom

The Intergraph Process, Power & Marine Educational Grant Program helps build student proficiency and experience in using engineering software. For educational institutions, the program brings advanced technology software to the classroom, expands course offerings at minimal cost and enables instructors to upgrade skills through commercial training. The program also provides industry with qualified job candidates trained to use the popular Intergraph engineering software. Educational institutions worldwide with engineering and technical curricula associated with the process manufacturing, power generation and offshore petroleum industries are eligible to apply for grants, which have a one-year, renewable term.

Grant recipients under the standard program are eligible to receive SmartPlant Instrumentation, SmartPlant P&ID, SmartPlant Electrical and SmartSketch software and maintenance; instructor training; technical installation assistance; and one complimentary registration for the Intergraph Process, Power & Marine APEX industry conference series. A program option includes PDS, SmartPlant 3D and SmartPlant Review, depending on institution curriculum and expertise. Intergraph awards educational grants non-exclusively, without restriction concerning existing or future installations of software from other vendors, to help widen student educational horizons and broaden school curricula.

The program closed 2004 with 13 grants totaling more than $3.8 million ( U.S.) in estimated commercial lease value awarded to educational institutions worldwide.

Intergraph Software Used in Design, Operations

The Intergraph software ( is widely used in design, construction, operations and maintenance in a variety of industries including onshore and offshore oil and gas, shipbuilding, petrochemicals, power generation, chemicals, metals and mining, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage and others. The most advanced plant design environment available, SmartPlant 3D offers concurrent engineering, real-time clash detection and integration with SmartPlant as well as other software and systems. SmartPlant Instrumentation supports controls system engineering, while SmartPlant P&ID and SmartPlant Electrical support piping and instrumentation and electrical engineering, respectively. PDS is for integrated 3D and 2D plant design and SmartPlant Review is for 3D visualization. SmartSketch provides multi-discipline, precision drafting, drawing and diagramming.
