The Bucharest Municipality faces all of the challenges that come with managing infrastructure for an urban area of more than two million residents. Managing the data assets for that infrastructure is a complex process for more than 1,100 employees, spread out across 90 departments making up 30 divisions.
In 2000, Bucharest recognized the municipality’s information management system needed a
major improvement. The main challenge was eliminating isolated information at the departmental
level, which blocked information flow and resulted in data inconsistency at the institutional level. The system needed to integrate all department applications, so every employee would have access to streamlined information. The integration of geospatial data was required in hundreds of different workflows managed by different information systems.
The Bucharest Urban Database (BUD) project was launched with the goal of unifying management-related data and workflows into a single, geospatially powered information system. Today, the system supports day-to-day workflow automation across the organization, while providing accurate, reliable, and fast decision-making support for the management team. Based on credentials and the quality of the proposed geospatial solution, Bucharest selected Intergraph® and its GeoMedia® technology.
