Regione Del Veneto, Italy

Internet-enabled Project Supports Regional and Municipal Government

Intergraph® Software Improves Distribution of Geodata

The Challenge:

The challenge for Italian Regione del Veneto’s GIS and Cartography Department was to provide a new, highly cost-efficient technology environment for the ongoing distribution of cartographic data and maps by regional and local government. This information supports urban planning, environment analysis, a tourist user portal, and other functions.

The Project Objectives:

  • Guarantee an efficient and reliable way to distribute cartography and GIS data using an Internet infrastructure
  • Develop a technology platform that would cover the entire regional workflow, replacing existing local GIS applications
  • Implement the new technology environment with a highly guaranteed level of cost-effective support

The Solution:

In the first phase of this critical, Internet-enabled project, regional technical geographic data (CTR) is being distributed at 5k and 10k map scale in numeric and digital raster and hardcopy formats. User-friendly “how-to” download and data access rights information is provided, as is the ability to easily visualize and analyze CTR raster and orthophoto data online.

Links to other data sources extend the richness and reach of the region’s geo-solution. A link to a key regional GIS photo archive covering flight mission planning and aerial photos is provided by Centro di Servizi Interdipartimentali di Rilievo, Cartografia ed Elaborazione (CIRCE) of the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV). A further link provides access to a geographic database of high-precision geodetic points.

The region’s legally compliant corporate license agreement with Intergraph allows Regione del Veneto to distribute one GeoMedia software license to every regional municipality and other valid local government users, free of charge. The customization of GeoMedia® for the region enables it to be used for urban planning and other essential applications in which data, procedures, and knowledge is exchanged between local and regional governments. Going forward, the new geo-environment will also be used to meet EU Directive needs.
