A World Away: Advanced Technology Allows Remote Engineering

Turning to the global office to optimize and maintain data integrity during collaborative projects

Today’s global industries are characterized by complex designs that entail challenging engineering practices. Typically, companies construct remote facilities with project teams scattered across the globe. Each company has engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) personnel who possess strengths and skill sets that will dictate their role in the project.

Recognizing the impact this diversity will have on their success, an increasing number of engineering firms are turning to the global office to optimize and maintain data integrity. Intergraph PDS® enables owner/operators and EPCs to gain simultaneous access to data. It also allows for improved design coordination, error reduction and enhanced productivity.

PDS put into practice

When it came to designing a world-scale natural gas liquids (NGL) extraction and fractionation facility, Aux Sable Liquid Products enlisted the expertise of Delta Hudson Engineering Ltd. (a McDermott Company). Delta Hudson – a Calgary, Alberta, Canada-based engineering, procurement, construction and management firm – had the NGL extraction expertise needed for a project of this magnitude.

It also had demonstrated its large-scale engineering execution capabilities on a number of international projects.

As a leader in liquids recovery and the proprietor of multiple patented technologies that achieve impressive recovery levels with reduced power consumption, Delta Hudson believes in incorporating innovation into all aspects of its operations.

The innovative strategy applied to the Aux Sable facilities included equipping project teams with the latest technology and systems to ensure that each team had the tools to maximize its contribution to the project with optimum efficiency.

“Delta Hudson chose to use Intergraph PDS for a number of reasons,” says Tom Pearson, project systems supervisor for Delta Hudson. “Most importantly, it integrates all engineering disciplines through one interface and links them to a common database. This integration facilitates concurrent engineering, which increases productivity and reduces project schedules.”

With the Aux Sable project site located more than 2,575 kilometers (1,600 miles) from Delta Hudson’s head office, Delta’s project team relied on Intergraph PDS remote engineering capability, as well as Delta’s suite of Online Project Systems (OPS) to allow the entire project task force concurrent access to the project’s dynamic design data.

Delta Hudson is routinely engaged as a development partner with Intergraph, and from an engineering perspective it provides valuable direction to the Intergraph suite of Engineering Solutions software. During the successful execution of this major project, the relationship proved once again to be of benefit to Delta Hudson and its work practices.

“With tools such as SmartPlant® Review, we are not only able to complete electronic squad checks within our office across disciplines, but we are also able to extend reviews directly to the customer,” Pearson says. “We’re very excited about the new collaboration capability as it adds yet another dimension to our global execution capabilities.”

SmartPlant Review is the visualization workhorse for 3D plant design. It provides advanced features for in-depth review and analysis of 3D computer models. If the client company also uses SmartPlant Review, its personnel can analyze the models and suggest changes.
