The petrochemical market's recent growth in Asia-Pacific is phenomenal. With increases in population and industrial activity, the demand for chemicals used in producing plastics and textiles is driving much of this growth. The region also has a strong supply of its own oil-and-gas resources to sustain petrochemical production.
Competition for supplying this demand is increasing as well, and multinational and regional producers are vying for a greater market share. Consistent production and greater efficiency are keys to winning business. Many of these companies recognize that accurate plant lifecycle information is crucial in both of these areas.
In particular, plant owner/operators are discovering that the intelligent use of plant engineering data saves money and time. For several years, Rayong Olefins Co. Ltd. (ROC), one of the leading petrochemical players in Asia-Pacific, has understood the importance of this information. But when the Rayong plant first began production, intelligent applications weren't available.
Since then, however, ROC has turned to Intergraph for solutions to maintain accurate engineering data for use in plant operations. The company is now using Intergraph SmartPlant® P&ID to convert its CAD process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) into intelligent ones. The result will allow ROC to access accurate P&ID information when making important business decisions.
"The world business environment is changing fast nowadays. In order to adapt to the changing environment, the operating plant needs to be modified occasionally," says Surachate Chalothorn, the technical department manager at Rayong Olefins. "This means changing the P&ID. It's important to our business that the P&IDs are kept up to date. Using the wrong version of a P&ID can cost us time and money.
"We took a long-term perspective and saw we would need to update all of our P&IDs eventually," he adds. "It made sense to choose a solution where we could make those changes electronically and have access to the information throughout the plant lifecycle. We've already recommended that other companies in our group do this, as well."
