Ngee Ann Polytechnic Renews Intergraph® SmartMarine® 3D Education Program

Institution of higher learning incorporates SmartMarine 3D as part of academic curriculum for next-generation engineers

SINGAPORE, Aug. 5, 2010 – Intergraph®, the world’s leading provider of enterprise engineering software to the process, power and marine industries, has renewed the SmartMarine® 3D education program with the Mechanical Engineering Division, School of Engineering at Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Singapore.

The Marine and Offshore Technology Course within the Mechanical Engineering Division is responsible for nurturing next-generation engineers for the local marine and offshore industry. Ngee Ann Polytechnic has been working hand-in-hand with local shipyards to shape its academic curriculum and to make sure it remains current. This ensures that graduates are trained in the software that is widely used by the marine and offshore industry in Singapore so that they can readily find employment with marine companies.

Intergraph’s SmartMarine 3D solution has gained remarkable traction in the market with several leading shipyards adopting SmartMarine 3D. It is critical that Ngee Ann Polytechnic offers SmartMarine 3D as part of its academic curriculum to remain relevant in the industry and equip their graduates with the right skills. The Mechanical Engineering Division recognises that SmartMarine 3D is a forward-looking 3D modelling application with great potential in the marketplace. With the acceptance of SmartMarine 3D by leading shipyards, the industry can look to Ngee Ann Polytechnic to supply a skilled pool of SmartMarine 3D operators and graduates will not have challenges finding employment.

“As an academic institution, we constantly strive to provide our graduates with the latest and most advanced technology that is sought after by the industry,” said Woon Kok Meng, Director of Mechanical Engineering Division, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. “We recognise that SmartMarine 3D is a mature technology and it is endorsed by major players in the marine and offshore industry.”

SmartMarine 3D is the only next-generation 3D system that provides all the capabilities needed to design and build offshore devices from design to fabrication to operations and maintenance – all in a single, integrated environment. It is a rule-driven, data-centric solution for streamlining processes while making it more useable over the operation, maintenance and modification lifecycle of the device.

Tom Doran, Executive Vice President, Process, Power & Marine, Asia Pacific, Intergraph, said, “SmartMarine 3D is the only next-generation 3D solution specifically developed for the marine and offshore industry. It is exciting for Intergraph to have this partnership with Ngee Ann Polytechnic, where their graduates will take with them the knowledge and expertise in SmartMarine 3D into the marketplace and bring productivity into our clients’ businesses and enhance their global competitiveness.”

The Mechanical Engineering Division signed an Education Grant Program with Intergraph. The agreement included licences for SmartMarine 3D, SmartPlant Review and SmartSketch for use in the Marine and Offshore Technology Course. The first contract was signed in September 2006 and subsequently renewed in August 2008, with the latest renewal signed in July 2010.

Prior to the Education Grant Program, Ngee Ann Polytechnic was not using any Intergraph applications. Today, the school is incorporating SmartMarine 3D as part of its CAD module to students in the second-year and final-year programs. Lecturers also encourage final-year students to use SmartMarine 3D as the design tool for their final-year projects. In 2009, three groups of final-year students utilised SmartMarine 3D for their projects and one of those groups received a book prize by the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAMES) for outstanding design. The Mechanical Engineering Division also conducts continuing education on SmartMarine 3D to working adults, thus generating increased exposure of SmartMarine 3D to a larger audience.

“SmartMarine 3D has a user-friendly interface that captures our students’ interest and makes it easy to retain knowledge,” said Gerry Cheong, Senior Lecturer, Mechanical Engineering Division, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. “This greatly facilitates their learning of SmartMarine 3D and understanding of its use as a real-world application for companies in the marine and offshore industry.”

“Ngee Ann Polytechnic has a great partnership with Intergraph,” said Mr. Woon. “Intergraph has constantly demonstrated a high level of professionalism and commitment in support of our program. Together with Intergraph, we will continue to nurture the next generation of engineers for the industry.”
